Trump Highlights U.S. Position of Greatest Strength Since WWII Amid Escalating Iran Conflict

Stella Green, July 20, 2026

President Donald Trump on Monday praised retired Army Lieutenant Colonel James Carafano for asserting that America’s position in the Middle East is the strongest it has been since the end of World War II.

In a social media post, Trump lauded Carafano, a senior counselor at the Heritage Foundation. The remarks cited Carafano’s statement: “Our position in the Region is the strongest that it’s been since the end of World War II. We have been dealing with this from [former President] Jimmy Carter. Since the days of Jimmy Carter, we have never had a position in the Region this strong to create a better future for the Region and then, that means a safer America, and I think that this is the price we are paying — Trust me, it’s going to pay off for decades!”

Trump’s comments followed heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. The U.S. military has targeted Iranian infrastructure for nine consecutive days, while Iran has launched missiles and drones at American assets across the Middle East. Two American soldiers were killed during an Iranian missile and drone strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on Saturday.
