Trump Accuses Senator Cornyn of Reversing Stance on Compensation Fund After Texas Primary Loss

President Donald Trump criticized Texas Senator John Cornyn on Friday for blocking Todd Blanche’s nomination as attorney general, claiming the senator reversed his position only after losing the GOP primary to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — a race in which Trump endorsed Paxton.

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Cornyn of reversing his stance on a proposed compensation fund designed to help Americans who allegedly suffered government weaponization under the Biden administration. Trump stated that Cornyn had previously supported the fund but changed his position after losing the primary.

“The senator never had a problem with the so-called ‘Fund,’ which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration,” Trump wrote. “Until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas.”

Trump defended the fund as intended for Americans whose lives were “ruined” by political persecution under the Biden administration, noting that voters had endorsed this position by electing him in 2024. He also stated he gave up any payments from the fund, referencing an FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022. Trump claimed many legal experts, including Cornyn, had previously condemned the raid as an example of government weaponization.

The president argued that Americans targeted by federal investigators deserved compensation and said voters endorsed that position by electing him in 2024.

Trump concluded that “Todd Blanche, a good man, should be immediately approved as U.S. Attorney General.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed a vote on Blanche’s nomination after Cornyn and Senator Thom Tillis demanded written assurances from the Justice Department that it had permanently abandoned a proposed $1.8 billion anti-weaponization compensation fund. Cornyn has stated he is “not prepared” to support Blanche without formal documentation confirming commitments made during his confirmation hearing.

The standoff highlights the ongoing rift between Trump and Cornyn following Trump’s endorsement of Paxton in Texas’ Republican Senate primary, which ended Cornyn’s Senate career. Blanche, who previously served as one of Trump’s personal defense attorneys, has earned strong backing from the president, who has called him “a STAR” and said he has the potential to become “one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time.”
