Surface-to-Air Missiles at Universal Studios: Todd Bridges Recalls Nightmare Taping with Nancy Reagan

Todd Bridges, the actor best known for his role on Diff’rent Strokes, described a high-stakes security operation during a 1983 taping that featured first lady Nancy Reagan. The episode, titled “The Reporter,” promoted her national “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign, with Gary Coleman’s character, Arnold Jackson, exposing drug dealing at his school and prompting the first lady’s visit.

Bridges recounted how federal agents deployed surface-to-air missiles in vehicles and enforced a strict no-fly zone above Universal Studios’ lot. “One of the guys showed me in his trunk; they had surface-to-air missiles in there and stuff,” he said. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ If they came close, they’d shoot you out the sky.”

Cast members endured repeated security screenings to reach the set. “Man, it was crazy. You got scanned when you came close, you got scanned again, then they would scan you again, and then scan you again before you actually got in the door,” Bridges recalled. “It was a nightmare. We couldn’t wait till she left.”

The soundstage atmosphere grew tense as President Ronald Reagan attended the taping with scores of plainclothes agents who occupied much of the live audience. “Nancy Reagan was on the show, but the president came in the audience, and the audience was all Secret Service,” Bridges said. “It was the biggest, craziest nightmare ever. It was terrible.”

During a 2016 interview, Bridges noted how the overwhelming security presence disrupted the sitcom’s usual dynamic. The live audience held about 300 people—most were agents: “Tons of them. They had guys on the roof. They had guys everywhere, man.” He added that agents refused to react to cast jokes but responded enthusiastically to Nancy Reagan’s lines. “They were dressed just like normal people,” Bridges explained. “The way I knew they weren’t our regular audience is that [the cast] weren’t laughing at their jokes—but when Nancy Reagan made a joke, they’d all laugh: ‘Ha ha ha ha!’”

Despite the chaos, Bridges credited Reagan’s message with helping him overcome severe substance abuse issues in his later life. “At my lowest point, I started remembering what she was talking about and the reason why the stuff was so bad,” he said. “Once you figure out the root cause—what makes you do something [self-destructive]—you figure out how to stop.”
