Myth of the Sudden Exit: Dustin Nolan Clarifies Planned News Industry Departure

Former KWQC-TV6 anchor Dustin Nolan criticized social media platforms for mischaracterizing his on-air resignation announcement, emphasizing that his departure from journalism was a deliberate decision months in advance rather than an impulsive protest against his employer or the industry.

The Emmy-winning morning news anchor, who joined KWQC-TV6 in Davenport, Iowa, in 2022, addressed reports following his final broadcast on Friday. Nolan explicitly denied being fired, forced out, or staging a live mutiny against his station. “I was simply explaining my approach to journalism and reminding everyone why we do what we do,” he wrote online.

Nolan clarified that his exit had been planned long before the broadcast. He accused multiple outlets of ignoring factual context to generate misleading headlines. “To those publications that posted this story without asking for context and those who grasped at straws to fabricate a storyline that simply doesn’t exist, you are part of the problem,” he stated.

He reassured viewers his decision was not political or corporate in nature. “To those who may be disappointed to hear that this wasn’t an anchor taking a stand against the industry, I hope you know that local journalists are working hard every day to be the difference in the industry,” Nolan added.

During his final broadcast for KWQC-TV6—which serves the Quad Cities region including Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Rock Island and Moline, Illinois—Nolan announced he was stepping away from the news industry. “I have chosen to step away from the news industry,” he said. “Before I say goodbye, I just want to say, I hope every one of you that’s allowed me to be a part of your mornings knows how important it is that you’ve trusted me these past few years.”

Nolan stressed his commitment to truth and depth over trends. “I believe we owe viewers the best we can do because without them, none of us could do this job,” he said. “We must not be just trends or sanitized news; facts matter, and they help people think beyond their comfort zones.”
