Left-Wing Vandalism and Algae Protests Threaten Trump’s Lincoln Memorial Pool Restoration

On June 22, 2026, David Hearn of Maryland was arrested by U.S. Park Police for allegedly tampering with material inside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. The incident follows a pattern of escalating opposition to President Donald Trump’s efforts to restore the nation’s capital landmark.

The pool, originally constructed in 1922 and described as “absolutely filthy” during its recent restoration phase, had been leaking 45,000 gallons of water daily prior to President Trump’s $14.8 million project. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed the severity of the condition, noting that a previous attempt under President Barack Obama cost $34 million but failed entirely, while no meaningful action was taken during the Biden administration.

President Trump has pledged to complete the restoration ahead of America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. However, recent vandalism has intensified scrutiny. In a statement, President Trump blamed “Radical Left Lunatics” for the damage, accusing them of pouring “corrosive and destructive chemicals into the Pool.” He also highlighted incidents at the National Mall where leftists created an image of “86-47” in grass—a reference to Donald Trump as the 47th president.

As work continues, the pool has become a gathering place for agitators. Progressive supporters have begun wearing algae costumes and carrying banners declaring “Algae’s Smarter Than MAGA,” celebrating the algae growth that followed initial cleanup efforts. The president noted contractors would likely need to drain significant portions of water to address damage but assured repairs would be completed as quickly as possible.

President Trump’s administration has reported nearly a 60% decrease in homicides and a 39% drop in violent crime across Washington, D.C., since implementing a federal law enforcement surge.
