Hillary Clinton Calls Biden’s 2024 Bid a “Terrible Mistake”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has labeled former President Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election bid a “terrible mistake,” arguing that stepping aside earlier would have allowed the Democratic Party to field a candidate capable of defeating Donald Trump.

During an interview with David Remick, Clinton stated that Biden should have adhered to his 2020 campaign pledge of serving only one term. “I believe if he had kept to that plan and said in, say, the late summer of ‘23 that he wasn’t going to run,” she said, “we would have had a real contest.” Clinton added that whoever emerged as the Democratic nominee would have beaten Donald Trump.

The interview followed the Democratic Party’s recent review of Kamala Harris’ 2024 election loss to Trump. Biden ended his campaign after a widely criticized debate performance against Trump on June 27, 2024, and Harris became the party’s nominee but lost in a shortened general election.

Clinton’s remarks mark a sharp contrast from her earlier support for Biden in 2022. At the Aspen Ideas Festival that year, she stated: “I would endorse our sitting president, yes, of course.”

She also referenced Jill Biden’s memoir, “View From the East Wing,” where the former first lady claimed to have thought her husband was having a stroke during the debate. Clinton said Harris’ loss could be attributed to her campaign strategy as vice-presidential nominee while trying to distance herself from Biden.

A spokesperson for Biden declined to comment on Clinton’s criticisms.
