Dolly Parton’s Final Wish: Rest in a Beautiful Bed of Plush Cotton

Dolly Parton had one final request for her family before her death on Tuesday at age 80: She wanted to be laid to rest in a “beautiful bed of plush cotton.”

Her nephew and longtime head of security, Bryan Seaver, revealed the wish in an emotional video announcing her death. Seaver said Parton had asked him years ago to make the announcement when the time came.

“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he stated in the video.

Seaver described how Parton expressed her wish: “Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton, because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”

The request offered a poignant contrast to the glamorous image Parton cultivated throughout her decades-long career. Known for elaborate rhinestone-covered outfits and a larger-than-life stage presence, her final wishes were simple and centered on comfort.

In an earlier interview, Parton had spoken about her funeral preferences, stating she wanted the country-gospel hymn “If We Never Meet Again” played at her service due to its special meaning for her family and its association with her father’s funeral.

The family is planning a small, private funeral service. They have asked fans who wish to honor Parton to share tributes on social media or leave messages through her official website, while requesting donations be directed to Parton’s Imagination Library rather than flowers.

Speaking on behalf of the Parton and Owens families, Seaver described the loss as deeply painful but added that Parton had “lived in the light.” He said she was now reunited with her late husband, Carl Dean, along with her parents and other loved ones who had died before her.

Parton died following a period of health problems. She had addressed her health publicly days prior to her death, stating she was managing health challenges but remained determined to continue working.

The singer leaves behind a career spanning more than six decades, marked by hits including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” alongside a lasting legacy in acting, business, and philanthropy.
