China Analyst Claims Fauci Hid Critical Details on Coronavirus Origins

China analyst Gordon Chang stated on Thursday that former White House COVID-19 adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci “has a lot to hide” regarding the origins of the coronavirus. Chang argued that Fauci’s repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment before a Senate committee raises questions about his role in funding virus research tied to Wuhan, China.

On Wednesday, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Chang, author of “The Coming Collapse of China” and “Plan Red: China’s Project to Destroy America,” made these remarks on Thursday. He pointed to an October 2014 pause in federal funding for gain-of-function research involving influenza, MERS, and SARS pathogens under the Obama administration, which Chang claimed President Barack Obama issued due to awareness of its dangers.

Chang asserted that Fauci directed such work offshore, specifically funding the Wuhan Institute of Virology through the EcoHealth Alliance in New York. Documented records show approximately $600,000 in National Institutes of Health funds were transferred to the Wuhan lab via EcoHealth Alliance between 2014 and 2019.

Chang cited two scientific papers from 2016 and 2017 authored by Wuhan researchers that acknowledged funding from Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request later revealed that NIAID-funded work at the Wuhan lab produced enhanced coronavirus strains exceeding safety thresholds set by the National Institutes of Health.

Chang described the facility as “a biological weapons lab” and claimed Fauci committed perjury twice in 2021 during Senate testimony. Fauci has never been charged with perjury and denied funding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology during his 2021 Senate testimony when questioned by Senator Rand Paul.

Then-President Joe Biden pardoned Fauci in January 2025 for any federal offenses through that date, though Senator Paul states this pardon does not extend to statements made during Wednesday’s hearing. Paul, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, scheduled an August 5 vote on whether to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress after Fauci declined to answer questions about diary entries Paul released last weekend.
