Urgent Plea: Savannah Guthrie Details Family’s Agony as Second Ransom Note Claims Mother’s Death

Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of “Today,” delivered an emotionally charged appeal for public assistance on Tuesday in the ongoing investigation into her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie. The plea came hours after details emerged that a second ransom note claimed the 84-year-old had died.

During the morning broadcast, Guthrie stated she was not involved in the network’s coverage of the case but could not ignore her family’s suffering. “I love you guys and I love this place,” she told her co-hosts. “This is unusual and unprecedented, to say the least, to be sitting here. But I don’t have any comment on this story and I’m not involved in our coverage — but I can’t pretend I’m not here. And so, since I am, I wanted to take the opportunity to ask people to come forward, somebody knows something.”

Guthrie described how the crisis has devastated her siblings and children: “This is the life that my sister lives, I live, that my brother lives, that our extended family lives, that our children live every day. We are in agony.”

She added that her family cannot be at peace: “We’re begging for your help. We love our mom and we’ll never stop looking for her, ever.”

The appeal followed a significant shift in the investigation on June 22, when it was reported that a second letter sent to an Arizona affiliate described Nancy Guthrie as deceased. Unlike the initial note, which claimed she was safe and demanded money for release, this message did not request payment or include an apology.

Law enforcement officials have reviewed both communications and currently view them as potentially credible.

Guthrie previously made direct statements to potential captors but later acknowledged that her mother might not have survived the abduction. In a February 24 video on Instagram, she said: “She may have already gone home to the Lord that she loves. If this is what is to be, then we will accept it, but we need to know where she is.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues its investigation, which began by treating the home as a potential crime scene and deploying homicide investigators based on forensic observations. Sheriff Chris Nanos remarked during a February press conference: “I hope we find her safe and sound, but we cannot ignore what’s in front of us.”
