U.S. Secret Service to Provide Free Suits for New Agents Amid DHS Shutdown

The U.S. Secret Service will begin providing two tailored suits to newly trained agents assigned to protective details under a program aimed at reducing out-of-pocket costs for recruits and potentially boosting recruitment.

The initiative comes as the Department of Homeland Security operates under a partial government shutdown.

According to a proposed five-year contract published last week, each new graduate of protective detail training will receive two navy-blue tailored suits with name embroidery inside the jacket.

A source familiar with the decision indicated the change was prompted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s dissatisfaction with how agents previously purchased their own suits.

Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, disputed that account, stating the program aims to address inequities for “the men and women who are just starting their careers,” rather than concerns about appearances.

McLaughlin clarified that while the Secret Service provides uniforms for its uniformed division—including protective vests and dark police-style clothing—the agency does not cover the cost of suits for agents assigned to protective detail roles.

A separate source said DHS leadership views the initiative as a potential recruiting tool by alleviating financial burdens, while another noted the agency must find funding within its existing budget.

A former senior law enforcement official confirmed that the Secret Service has never provided free suits to plainclothes agents and that agents historically could not seek reimbursement for suit expenses.

Some veterans have expressed surprise at the spending decision. A former Secret Service agent remarked, “With all the resource challenges the Secret Service faces, this seems like an odd expenditure.”

A Secret Service official stated that agents typically earn between $70,000 and $90,000 annually, including benefits.

The federal contracting notice on sam.gov, posted February 11, specifies tailored dress suits for training at the James J. Rowley Training Center, requiring two navy-blue suits per student with name embroidery inside the jacket.

This proposal arrives as the Department of Homeland Security remains in a partial shutdown tied to negotiations over immigration enforcement policy and funding. DHS has reported that many employees continue working during the lapse in appropriations, with the shutdown beginning February 14 and requiring numerous DHS workers to remain on duty without pay.
