U.S. Aviation System in Peril as Government Shutdown Continues

Stella Green, February 1, 2026

The Department of Transportation has unveiled a shutdown contingency plan Thursday, mandating the furlough of more than 10,000 Federal Aviation Administration employees if the partial government shutdown persists.

Under the plan, 13,835 air traffic controllers are required to work without pay during the funding gap, sparking fears of renewed strain on the U.S. aviation infrastructure.

The shutdown is anticipated to last at least until Tuesday, as House Democrats have yet to secure the necessary votes to expedite a funding package that would restore government operations.

According to the Department of Transportation’s website notice, “Portions of DOT are affected by a lapse in appropriations,” with potential consequences including outdated website information, delayed transactions, and unanswered inquiries until funding is reinstated.

The aviation sector has previously experienced severe disruptions during last year’s extended shutdown, when more than 4,500 flights were canceled within a single weekend in mid-November 2025, and numerous airports nationwide saw reduced operations.

Safety concerns have also lingered throughout the past year following high-profile incidents, including a fatal collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines flight in January 2025.

President Donald Trump stated Saturday that he hopes lawmakers will act swiftly to end the shutdown. “So hopefully enough people will use their heads,” Trump remarked, emphasizing that a prolonged funding lapse would be “not a good thing for the country.”
