Trump’s Naval Move Toward Iran Signals Deterrence Strategy Amid Nuclear Tensions

Stella Green, February 1, 2026

Former Rep. Jack Kingston described President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy a U.S. naval armada toward Iran as a strategic move designed to increase pressure on Tehran and keep the regime off balance during ongoing deliberations over Iran’s nuclear program.

Kingston emphasized that adversaries cannot predict whether Trump will escalate actions, stating: “He keeps our foreign adversaries off balance because he’s not predictable.”

The Georgia Republican contrasted this approach with past administrations, noting that foreign leaders had historically known presidents such as Biden and Obama often made statements without follow-through. “Donald Trump has shown time and time again he will follow through,” Kingston added.

Kingston characterized the naval deployment as a “pretty serious move” aimed at deterrence rather than immediate war, acknowledging: “The bottom line, though, is we don’t want to do it. Don’t make us do it, but we will do it.”

Former Rep. Pete King noted that the Pentagon would likely prepare options to maximize impact while minimizing risk to U.S. forces, citing the U.S. Navy’s global readiness as a key advantage.

King stated cyber operations could complement broader efforts and highlighted last summer’s U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities as effective deterrents. “Nobody, even the most conservative Republicans, really thought that was going to happen,” King remarked, adding that Tehran also “never thought it was going to happen.”

King emphasized these strikes have made Tehran less likely to test Trump again: “I think there will be a deal.”

The discussion later turned to Ukraine, where Kingston acknowledged a week-long pause in Russian attacks on Kyiv due to extreme cold as a positive step. He noted upcoming U.S.-Russian-Ukrainian talks in Miami would focus on territory and long-term security guarantees, including what he described as “a NATO-type agreement for Ukraine.”

Kingston stressed that any resolution requires sustained pressure on Moscow: “Putin will never do the right thing for the right reason. He will only do it for his own survival.” He also urged Europe to continue supporting Ukraine, stating: “This aggression cannot stand.”
