Trump’s Diplomatic Pledge on Iran Faces Scrutiny as Grenell Highlights Nuclear Threat

Stella Green, February 25, 2026

Richard Grenell, U.S. envoy for special missions, stated Wednesday that President Donald Trump would prioritize diplomatic solutions when addressing Iran.

“He’s not trying to recreate exactly what [former President Barack] Obama did because Obama got outmaneuvered by the Iranians,” Grenell said. “President Trump is extremely clear-eyed. As he said about the threat, this is the world’s No. 1 sponsor of terrorism.”

Grenell emphasized that Trump remains deeply committed to diplomacy but has set a high standard for negotiations, noting past deals with the Obama administration had provided billions of dollars to Iran. “The deals in the past have been terrible,” Grenell said. “President Trump has a very high bar, but he’s extremely serious about diplomacy.”

The envoy warned that Iran’s statements cannot be trusted, citing historical lies to former Secretary of State John Kerry regarding centrifuge counts and heavy water levels critical for nuclear weapons development. “Remember, there were years ago when Israelis found information proving the Iranian regime had been lying,” Grenell said. “The Obama team just got snookered.”

Grenell reiterated that while he believes in diplomacy, Iran poses a significant threat due to its funding of terrorism and financial capabilities. “How do you protect America? If America is threatened, then he will act,” the envoy added. Trump’s approach, Grenell stated, has involved thorough consideration of all angles before any decision, with his primary focus remaining American security.
