Thune Pushes for Shutdown Resolution Amid Uncertain Outlook

Stella Green, November 6, 2025

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., plans to initiate a vote Friday to address the ongoing government shutdown, according to reports. During a Thursday lunch, Thune informed lawmakers of his intention to advance the House-passed continuing resolution, which has previously failed 14 times. This iteration may incorporate a three-bill spending package negotiated with Democrats, aiming to extend government funding through January and replace the current Nov. 21 deadline.

Bipartisan discussions are underway regarding potential votes on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, though specifics remain unresolved. Thune expressed confidence in securing sufficient Democratic support for the proposal but acknowledged ongoing uncertainties due to procedural challenges and possible objections from senators.

Senate Democrats maintained unity following their own lunch meeting, declining to confirm support for any new Republican proposals. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., stated she could not confirm if an agreement was near, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., described Democratic discussions as “a very good, productive meeting.” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., emphasized the party’s commitment to staying united.
