James Fishback, a supporter of Gov. Ron DeSantis, is launching a challenge against Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., for the Republican nomination in Florida’s gubernatorial race. Donalds has secured the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, who remains a central figure in the state’s political landscape.

Fishback, founder of Azoria, an investment firm that opposes diversity initiatives, is positioning himself as a candidate focused on immigration reform and affordability. His platform includes proposals to replace H-1B visa workers with American citizens, according to Politico. Meanwhile, Trump allies such as Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., White House deputy chief of staff James Blair, and strategist Alex Bruesewitz have urged Fishback not to run, emphasizing the need for unity behind Donalds.

Fishback has openly criticized Donalds, stating that the congressman “has done nothing in 8 months to show that he can lead a state my family has known for four generations.” He also highlighted his own efforts to oppose Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and advocate for a seat on the central bank. Additionally, Fishback previously launched a super PAC against tech CEO Elon Musk following his dispute with Trump.

Paul Renner, former speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, is also vying for the Republican nomination, alongside DeSantis’ wife, Casey, who is considering a bid. Gov. DeSantis has not yet endorsed a candidate but has criticized Donalds and called Renner’s campaign “ill-advised.”
