Senate Probe Deepens: GOP Senator Demands Answers on Thomas Matthew Crooks, Assassin Attempt

WASHINGTON – In a move reflecting his frustration over the lingering questions surrounding the deadly July 13, 2024, assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson is intensifying calls for information from federal agencies.

The Wisconsin Republican chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations expressed shock and dismay during Wednesday’s appearance on “Pod Force One,” lamenting that nearly a year after the incident involving apparent lone would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks, meaningful answers remain elusive to him personally. He characterized his July 2025 subpoena for FBI records as an effort to simply prompt action regarding information already known or potentially available about Crooks.

“It’s just bizarre stuff,” Johnson stated in reference to Crooks appearing in a commercial, adding that while he understands President Trump faces numerous complex issues, questions surrounding the young man warrant attention. He specifically noted, “There’s some odd things about it… him appearing in commercials for, was it BlackRock…”

Johnson stressed his approach is collaborative: “My subpoenas to this administration are friendly subpoenas, just kind of to prompt action.” However, he remains convinced that unanswered questions feed the potential for misinformation and conspiracy theories.

He has now shifted focus to urging telecommunications companies to provide assistance with his ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Crooks.
