Senate Leader Tuberville Demands Immediate Filibuster Abolition to Secure Trump’s Agenda Before Midterms

In a Wednesday address, Senate Republican leader Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) declared that his party must eliminate the Senate filibuster to codify President Donald Trump’s legislative priorities ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Tuberville argued that the current 60-vote threshold grants Democrats excessive power to stall Republican initiatives while Republicans hold the chamber majority. “If I were president, I would urge the Republican caucus to recognize the gravity of this moment and what is at stake on Capitol Hill,” he stated. Tuberville noted progress already achieved, including passage of “the One Big Beautiful Bill [Act]” and numerous nominations.

However, Tuberville emphasized that the pace must accelerate as election deadlines approach. “We need to do more because Democrats are going to continue fighting and delaying everything,” he said. Under existing Senate rules, Tuberville asserted no meaningful progress can occur before November due to the inability to secure 60 votes. He called for a simple-majority pathway, urging Republicans to “bust the filibuster” and advance priority legislation without Democratic support.

Tuberville dismissed appeals to longstanding Senate traditions as excuses for inaction. “We don’t work for the Senate,” he stated. “We work for the American people.”

The senator also linked the issue to election integrity, warning that Democrat-led states are planning widespread fraud ahead of November elections. He urged swift passage of the SAVE America Act, stating: “If we don’t do the SAVE America Act, this country is going to be in trouble again.” Tuberville predicted Democrats would target President Trump aggressively if they regain control of Congress without such action.

With midterms approaching, Tuberville framed abolishing the filibuster as the fastest means to translate Trump’s agenda into law and prevent its reversal.
