Nick Reiner Faces First-Degree Murder Charges Following Schizophrenia Diagnosis

Ella Thomas, December 19, 2025

Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia prior to the Sunday murders of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Two sources stated that the medication Nick was taking made him “erratic and dangerous.” The sources reported that doctors had recently changed his medication, which rendered him even more erratic.

Nick, who was under treatment for mental illness at a Los Angeles-based rehabilitation center specializing in mental health and substance abuse, exhibited alarming behavior in the month leading up to the killings. The facility where Nick received care cost approximately $70,000 per month. A source described the medication change as making Nick “out of his head.”

Additional sources noted that Nick’s substance abuse exacerbated his schizophrenia.

At his arraignment on Wednesday, Nick Reiner did not enter a plea but confirmed the postponement of his hearing to January 7 at the request of his attorney. He appeared in shackles and wearing a suicide prevention smock during court proceedings.

Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors adding special circumstances for multiple murders and allegations that he used a dangerous weapon—a knife. These charges could result in a longer sentence.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has not decided whether to seek the death penalty in the case.

Rob Reiner was an Emmy-winning actor known for his role in “All in the Family” and later became a director of films including “When Harry Met Sally…” and “The Princess Bride.” He was a prominent liberal activist throughout his career.

Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer, film producer, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
