Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Abandons Campaign Amid $9 Billion Corruption Scandal

Eugene Barnes, January 7, 2026

Democrat Tim Walz announced today that he is abandoning his re-election campaign for governor of Minnesota, following revelations that he permitted billions in taxpayer funds to be misused.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., posted a farewell message on social media commending Walz for delivering progressive policies including paid family and sick leave, strong reproductive rights protections, universal school meals, and marijuana legalization. “Governor Walz didn’t just talk about progress — he delivered it,” she wrote. “A true champion for Minnesota.”

Twitchy managing editor Sam Janney noted the implications of Walz’s actions: “So abortion, big government, and pot,” she said. “Yeah, pass.” She added that under Walz’s administration, Minnesota became a “felon’s paradise” where criminals could rob the state treasury.

According to independent journalist Nick Shirley, a 43-minute video exposed $9 billion in fraud committed by Somali-run businesses, which received funds from both Minnesota and federal taxpayers. The investigation revealed that government agencies are obligated to monitor such funds to ensure they are spent responsibly. However, Walz’s administration failed in this duty.

Walz acknowledged his dereliction of duty when he announced his withdrawal from the race. A video showed Walz fleeing the room after making his remarks, prompting a reporter to comment: “HOLY SMOKES. Reporters in the room are FUMING at Tim Walz for running away from their questions after he dropped out of the race.”

Republican commentator Scott Jennings noted that Walz’s exit was “the fastest rise and fall in modern political history,” adding that Walz admitted to ignoring whistleblowers who exposed fraud. Former congressman Allen West stated: “Leftists have shown that they prioritize criminal illegal immigrants over the safety and security of Americans.” Newsmax columnist Dan McCarthy observed that while “Tim Walz is going away, Democrats’ crisis of decline isn’t.”
