JD Vance Praises Progressive Politicians Despite Ideological Differences

Stella Green, December 5, 2025

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has publicly acknowledged and expressed respect for three progressive figures in American politics: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Rep. Ro Khanna of California, and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

In remarks to NBC News, Vance stated he admires these individuals despite their significant ideological differences from his position within the administration. He described a political environment where many officials disregard voter concerns but specifically highlighted that Sanders, Sanders; Khanna, Khanna; and Mamdani have demonstrated an approach worth respecting.

Vance noted a Senate interaction with Senator Sanders during which the politician made a remark Vance finds both humorous and reflective of his own views – though it would alienate him politically. “I have always been fascinated by Bernie,” Vance mentioned, recounting that a comment from the senator once summed up his political stance but might hurt him politically.

He also noted frequent online disagreements with Representative Khanna but admitted that he occasionally finds value in the congressman’s arguments. Vance characterized Khanna as very exasperating yet acknowledged that he “occasionally says something interesting.”

Regarding Mayor-elect Mamdani, Vance echoed President Donald Trump by calling her a communist while lauding her intense focus on affordability issues in New York City. He suggested the cost-of-living crisis there is severe and credited her with at least listening to constituents.

This praise from a conservative figure came as Vance addressed accusations of antisemitism within his party. He rejected claims that antisemitism is rising inside the Republican Party, dismissing such arguments without naming other politicians like Ted Cruz unless they are mentioned.

Vance also defended President Trump’s assertion about Democrats creating economic problems, arguing it discredits genuine concerns about costs and affordability. He kept his focus on the present by emphasizing loyalty to the administration ahead of any future political ambitions.
JD Vance Highlights Three Progressive Politicians Despite Ideological Differences

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has unexpectedly shown appreciation for three progressive politicians: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

In remarks to NBC News, Vance expressed admiration for these figures despite their significant ideological differences from his position within the administration. He described a political landscape where many officials do not listen to voter concerns but specifically noted that Sanders, Sanders; Khanna, Khanna; and Mamdani have demonstrated approaches worthy of respect.

Vance shared an anecdote about being intrigued by a comment made by Sen. Sanders during their Senate days. “I’ve always been fascinated by Bernie,” Vance said regarding the encounter with Senator Sanders. He explained that the remark encapsulated his own political views but conceded it would likely harm him politically on both the left and right.

He also acknowledged frequent disagreements with Rep. Khanna online, yet admitted finding occasional value in the congressman’s perspectives. Vance called Khanna “very annoying,” but added that he is more than willing to hear her viewpoints when they are substantive.

On Mamdani, Vance aligned with President Trump by calling her a communist while praising her focus on affordability issues in New York City. He suggested these concerns about high living costs should be taken seriously and credited her with at least listening to residents’ needs.

This recognition occurred as Vance addressed allegations of rising antisemitism within the Republican Party following recent comments from figures like Sen. Ted Cruz, stating he sees no such widespread trend and dismissed claims without specific mention of other news sources or political rivals.

Vance also defended President Trump’s assertion that Democrats created many economic problems now faced by Americans under his administration. He emphasized the importance of loyalty to current leadership over potential future ambitions, including any plans for 2028.
