House Speaker Condemns NFL’s Super Bowl Halftime Choice Amid Controversy

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., criticized the NFL’s decision to feature Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Bad Bunny as the headliner for February’s Super Bowl halftime show, calling it a “terrible decision.” Johnson argued that performers like country music artist Lee Greenwood, whom he described as a “role model,” would be more suitable.

The comments followed a reporter’s question, with Johnson stating, “I didn’t even know who Bad Bunny was, but it sounds like a terrible decision, in my view.” When pressed for reasoning, he claimed the artist “isn’t someone who appeals to a broader audience” and expressed concern about the Super Bowl’s influence on “young, impressionable children.”

The NFL has faced criticism from conservative figures over the selection. Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has drawn controversy for lyrics and videos deemed explicit and politically charged. Tracks like “Safaera” and “Callaíta” include sexual content linked to reggaetón’s club scene, while songs such as “El Apagón” and “Pa Ti” targeted Puerto Rican leaders and foreign investors, sparking political backlash.

Former President Donald Trump also rejected the choice, calling it “absolutely ridiculous” in an interview with Newsmax. “I’ve never heard of him,” Trump said, adding that the decision was “crazy.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pledged to enforce immigration laws at the event, stating ICE officers would be present. Meanwhile, Greenwood’s patriotic anthem “God Bless the U.S.A.” has been a staple at Trump’s rallies during the 2024 election cycle.

The Super Bowl LX will take place Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
