Historic Drop in Border Crossings Under Trump’s Leadership

Stella Green, November 6, 2025

The Department of Homeland Security reported a record low in illegal border crossings for October 2025, marking a significant milestone under President Donald Trump’s administration. Preliminary data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection revealed 30,561 total encounters last month, the lowest figure ever recorded for any October since records began. This represents a 29% decline from the previous low in 2012 and an 79% reduction compared to October 2024. For six consecutive months, Border Patrol agents have reported no migrant releases, with all detained individuals processed according to legal procedures.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem hailed the achievement, stating, “History made: the lowest border crossings in October history and the sixth straight month of ZERO releases. This is the most secure border ever.” She credited Trump and DHS law enforcement for the success, adding, “You make America proud!” CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott emphasized the dedication of frontline personnel, noting their focus on results over rhetoric and a commitment to sustained border security. He reiterated, “Our mission is simple: Secure the border and safeguard this nation,” while vowing continued efforts despite claims of political motives.

Since Trump’s return to office, monthly apprehensions have averaged fewer than 10,000, a level of deterrence unseen in decades. October’s total of 9,845 apprehensions was 62% lower than the previous October low in 2018. Daily averages on the southwest border dropped to 258, a 95% decrease from prior administrations. From January through October, encounters totaled 106,134—a figure below the monthly average under former President Joe Biden, who saw crossings frequently exceed 150,000 per month.

The Department of Homeland Security attributed the decline to stricter enforcement measures and policy changes, including asylum and parole reforms. Final October statistics are pending, but officials underscored the trend as evidence of a steadfast focus on border control.
