Fragile Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas Faces Uncertain Future as International Peacekeeping Efforts Begin

Former National Security Council Chief of Staff Fred Fleitz warned on Newsmax that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains unstable, with the success of stabilizing Gaza dependent on forming an international peacekeeping force willing to operate in dangerous conditions.

Fleitz highlighted Vice President [JD] Vance’s recent remarks about the ceasefire, noting the administration’s cautious optimism as the agreement took effect. He emphasized that while the release of hostages by Hamas marked a significant step forward, maintaining the truce would be far more complex.

“The priority was getting out the live hostages,” Fleitz said. “That was accomplished, but the challenge now is securing long-term stability.”

He explained that diplomatic efforts to assemble an international stabilization force have gained momentum, though uncertainties remain about which nations would contribute troops and under what terms. Fleitz cited potential contributors such as Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, while acknowledging regional politics could complicate the process.

“I think Turkey wants to contribute, but I don’t think Israel will agree to that,” Fleitz said. “Israel also wants to veto troops from Qatar, but Egypt is likely to lead the effort.”

Fleitz described ongoing negotiations as delicate, with Hamas resisting demands to relinquish its weapons. He noted that while some countries are considering participation, their involvement hinges on Hamas’s cooperation.

“There is still hope,” Fleitz concluded, “but Israel will not tolerate violations by Hamas, and difficult decisions lie ahead.”
