FBI Warns of Escalating AI-Driven Scams Targeting U.S. Government Employees

Stella Green, December 20, 2025

FBI Director Kash Patel has issued an urgent warning to federal employees and their families, stating that a sophisticated scam campaign targeting access to government computer networks—first detected in May—has not subsided. The bureau reports that malicious actors are impersonating senior U.S. officials through text messages and AI-generated voice calls, often engaging contacts including family members in conversations on topics they claim expertise in. Once the deception is established, perpetrators swiftly request a transition to an encrypted messaging platform, which typically embeds malware designed to steal sensitive data from victims’ devices or computers. Alternatively, scammers may direct individuals to malicious links that lead to compromised websites. The stolen information can range from basic login credentials to highly sensitive government data, which criminals could exploit for various criminal activities. According to the latest FBI guidance, initial scam tactics frequently involve falsely claiming a “meeting with the president of the United States” or that the target has been nominated for a company board position. The bureau also explains that techniques employed include smishing (malicious text messaging) and vishing (voice-based deception), both of which leverage spear phishing—targeted email campaigns—to build credibility before accessing victims. To mitigate risks, the FBI advises verifying new contact details through previously confirmed channels or trusted sources if approached via unfamiliar platforms or numbers.
