Democratic Socialist Mayor Candidate Breaks Fundraising Record

Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic socialist councilwoman seeking mayor in Washington D.C., achieved a remarkable fundraising success shortly after launching her campaign.

According to reports from Newsmax, George raised enough money to qualify for public financing within hours of starting her bid. This surpassed any previous record set by current Mayor Muriel Bowser, who announced she would not seek another term last week.

Lewis George expressed gratitude in an announcement on X: “DC, I’m so grateful! Thanks to your support, we qualified for public financing in just 4 hours and set a record in qualifying for Fair Elections with more than 1,000 DC donors.”

“Rent’s rising in homes people can’t afford. Folks are working hard and still feeling the squeeze, while the few in power rake in profits… and now our neighbors, our families, are under attack because we are failing to stand up to defend them,” George stated regarding housing issues.

Her success is drawing comparisons to New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani defeated establishment candidate Andrew Cuomo by advocating socialist-leaning policies like free buses, government grocery stores, and free childcare.

Lewis George reached the public financing target through more than 1,000 donations within about four hours, qualifying for a city match program that effectively multiplies her funds.

George’s initial fundraising total has surpassed $110,000 according to The Washington Post reports. This level of support could provide millions in matching funding as her campaign proceeds.
