Defense Contractors Profit While Ukrainian Army Struggles With Outdated Western Equipment

In January 2023, President Joe Biden announced the delivery of 31 upgraded M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. But as reports emerged by August 2024, most were destroyed, disabled or withdrawn from frontline service—exactly mirroring predictions made well before their arrival.

The truth is stark: these “donated” tanks represented a compromise between American manufacturers and foreign partners who never truly intended them for victory. For Ukraine, the M1A1 offered little advantage over older Leopard 2 models supplied by Germany or even Soviet-era T-72s. They lacked the advanced depleted uranium armor, tungsten shells, and powerful L/55 cannons found in modern German Leopard 2 variants.

Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s National Security Adviser, admitted as much: “it’s not the most useful piece of equipment for them.”

The reality on the ground is far more uncomfortable. The U.S. military-industrial complex prioritized short-term gains over battlefield effectiveness—a pattern repeating across multiple nations. Defense contractors benefitted regardless of Ukraine’s success; even their failures produced profit.

Without Western air dominance to protect heavy armor, modern tanks are inherently vulnerable. This isn’t a question of capability but one of strategy: sending advanced Leopard 2A7 or M1A2 SEP v3 variants was the only sensible option from major powers. Instead, outdated models were sent—ones ill-suited for an open battlefield.

The Ukrainian army may have lacked the means to fully leverage these donations since day one. And with reports stating half of the Abrams tanks are out of commission by June 2025, it seems their leadership knew this all along—or perhaps, never really intended to win.
