Congress Targets Rep. Al Green for Second Removal After Disrupting Trump’s Address Stella Green, February 25, 2026 Republicans have once again introduced a censure resolution against Representative Al Green of Texas following his removal from the House chamber for interrupting President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening. Rep. Mike Rulli of Ohio stated, “Al Green is a disgrace to the United States Congress. I am immediately introducing a resolution to censure him for his disgusting outbursts and repeated violations of House Rules.” Green was ejected after holding up a banner reading “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!” as Trump entered the chamber. He remained standing and displayed the sign while Trump began speaking before being escorted out by the Sergeant at Arms. This incident marks the second consecutive year in which Green has been removed from the chamber during a presidential address. Green was previously censured in a 224–198 House vote last year after repeatedly interrupting Trump during a joint session and brandishing his cane. That prior incident also resulted in his removal from the chamber. The latest censure resolution could be voted on by the House in coming days as lawmakers determine whether Green’s conduct warrants additional disciplinary action. Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana declined to commit to holding a vote on the censure resolution, stating that “Al Green was removed pretty quickly. I don’t know if censure is going to be appropriate.” Johnson added: “I’ll let our colleagues decide that.” Politics
