Climate Change Activists Fuel U.S. “Greenwashing” Lawsuit Boom

Sentinel Update, December 8, 2025

Environmental activists and progressive cities have launched hundreds of lawsuits against U.S. fossil fuel companies in what critics call climate change litigation designed to impose costly new regulations through court orders.

These legal actions aim to reshape America’s energy policies by bypassing traditional political channels, with evidence suggesting they are being influenced by foreign interests like China seeking to weaken American energy independence while advancing their own green technologies.

According to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, the judiciary is increasingly involved in this process without public knowledge, through private training sessions that allegedly indoctrinate judges into favoring climate-related cases.

The Climate Judiciary Project (CJP), linked to the Environmental Law Institute, plays a significant role by offering educational programs to court members, though critics describe these as covert efforts to shape judicial outcomes.

One recent Oregon case illustrates this issue – Multnomah County sued ExxonMobil over damages from past heatwaves. It was revealed that lead attorney Roger Worthington failed to disclose his personal involvement in academic studies cited during the trial.

This non-disclosure raises concerns about independence and fairness, prompting questions about how much influence outside forces have on shaping climate science narratives for court cases.

Despite criticism regarding transparency, these lawsuits continue to receive substantial funding from Chinese-linked sources – including Energy Foundation China – enabling advocates to pursue extensive litigation even if individual cases are unlikely to succeed.
