Blackburn: Democrats Chose Negativity Over Patriotism in Response to Trump’s State of the Union

Stella Green, February 25, 2026

Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn declared Wednesday that Democrats have opted for negativity rather than patriotism in their reaction to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, even as America celebrates its 250th anniversary of founding.

During an interview on “Bianca Across the Nation,” Blackburn sharply contrasted Trump’s “positive” and “optimistic” speech with what she described as a condescending rebuttal from Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.

Blackburn praised President Trump for highlighting American achievements and resilience, particularly during the nation’s 250-year milestone. She noted his recognition of U.S. service members’ sacrifices in defending freedom.

“Last night, President Trump’s speech was so positive, so optimistic, and so focused on belief in America,” Blackburn stated. She also referenced Team USA’s men’s ice hockey team victory at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, where they won gold on Sunday.

She criticized the Democratic response as shifting from celebration to criticism, with Spanberger promoting policies Blackburn described as tax increases for hardworking citizens and government control by elites. Blackburn accused Spanberger of delivering a message that was “out-of-touch” and “condescending,” adding: “It was a very weak rebuttal… She came from an elitist point of view and really condescended to not only the American people but the people of Virginia.”
