Record-Shattering Government Shutdown Ends After 41 Days Stella Green, November 10, 2025 By Charlie McCarthy | Monday, 10 November 2025 08:54 AM EST Rep. John Rose, R-Tenn., criticized Democrats for prolonging the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, claiming they could have resolved the crisis over six weeks ago. The Senate took a pivotal step toward ending the stalemate on Sunday after moderate Democrats agreed to advance funding without guaranteed healthcare subsidy extensions, sparking backlash within their party. Rose told Newsmax the 41-day shutdown was “completely unnecessary” and caused “pain and anxiety for almost nothing.” He highlighted that Republicans in the House had previously passed full government funding, urging Senate Democrats to act swiftly to reopen agencies, pay federal workers, and restore benefits. “This should have been done six weeks ago,” he said. The Tennessee Republican praised seven Democratic senators and one independent who joined Republicans to move the funding package forward, calling it “long overdue.” He accused progressive Democrats of undermining the effort, citing Sen. Bernie Sanders’ condemnation of the deal as an example of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Rose argued that such rhetoric ignored the suffering of American families. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., celebrated the breakthrough, progressive lawmakers condemned the vote, with Sanders calling it a “very, very bad decision.” The agreement broke a six-week deadlock but exposed deep divisions within the Democratic Party over handling the shutdown.
