Trump Condemns ‘Communism’ After Democratic Gains in Key Races

The day after Republicans suffered significant electoral setbacks, including democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York’s mayoral race, President Donald Trump delivered a speech in Miami criticizing what he called the rise of communism. Speaking on the first anniversary of his second-term election, Trump framed the political landscape as a stark choice between “communism and common sense.”

“We have a choice between communism and common sense,” Trump asserted during the address, which was broadcast live on Newsmax and Newsmax2. “Does that make sense to you? It’s common sense or communism. If it worked, we’d be using it, but it hasn’t worked.” He accused Democratic opponents of promoting an “economic nightmare” while claiming his administration delivered an “economic miracle.”

Mamdani, 34, secured a historic win as New York’s first socialist and Muslim mayor, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. His platform included fare-free transit, rent freezes, and higher taxes on corporations and high earners. Trump dismissed Mamdani as a “100% communist lunatic,” a label echoed by critics like former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

The president also lamented losses in gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as Democratic successes in California’s redistricting efforts. “We lost a little bit of sovereignty last night in New York,” Trump said, vowing to counter what he called the threat of communism. “As long as I’m in the White House, the United States is not going communist in any way, shape, or form.”

Republicans faced further setbacks in state-level elections, with Trump acknowledging missed opportunities in candidate selection. He reiterated his commitment to “law and order,” “strong borders,” and prioritizing American interests over what he described as Democratic chaos.
