Fox News Drops Maria Bartiromo: Early Clue in Post-Trump Media Transition

September 4, 2026 — Fox News’ abrupt removal of Maria Bartiromo has sparked a critical question in the media landscape: Was this ouster of one of President Donald Trump’s most trusted television allies merely a personnel dispute, or an early indication that Fox is preparing for a post-Trump Republican Party in 2028?

Analysts Brian Stelter and Alex Griffing both view Bartiromo’s extraordinary exit as evidence that Fox’s loyalty to Trump has clear limits.

Fox announced without warning that she was “no longer with FOX.” She received no farewell broadcast, her shows were immediately renamed or reassigned, and her biography disappeared from Fox’s website.

Stelter described the circumstances as “all the signs here of a firing, of a very contentious breakup,” comparing them to Tucker Carlson’s sudden removal in 2023.

The immediate dispute reportedly involved Trump. Fox management concluded Bartiromo violated her employment agreement by sharing internal editorial guidance with White House officials after the network directed programs not to pursue some of Trump’s claims involving China and the 2020 election.

Fox officially labeled Bartiromo’s departure a “business decision.”

However, the larger question is whether Fox itself is beginning to pivot. Griffing argued that Bartiromo’s removal demonstrates Fox “does not fear” the anger of Trump or MAGA viewers the way it once might have. He described the Fox-Trump relationship as historically “difficult, but symbiotic”: Trump receives a powerful platform and Fox benefits from his audience and access.

As Trump becomes a lame-duck president and Republicans increasingly contemplate 2028, Griffing argues that calculation could change.

Fox’s prime-time lineup remains strongly supportive of Trump, so Bartiromo’s departure by itself does not establish a network-wide political realignment. But Fox and the Murdoch family have never been synonymous with Trump or the MAGA movement. Their interests have overlapped substantially, while also diverging on personalities, editorial decisions and corporate priorities.

Trump clearly recognized the significance of Bartiromo’s removal. He wrote: “I can’t believe Maria Bartiromo is no longer going to have her great show(s),” calling her a “true warrior” and warning Fox that her many fans “will not be happy.” People close to Trump reported he was “not happy,” including when he saw Bartiromo’s name already stripped from her morning program.

Bartiromo was one of Trump’s most reliable allies at Fox, yet the network removed her swiftly despite knowing the decision could anger Trump and MAGA viewers.

As Griffing put it, Fox’s “need to keep him happy” may be becoming less valuable as the political world begins looking beyond Trump toward 2028.
