McConnell Aides Refuse to Address Health Update as Pressure Mounts

A senior aide to Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declined to answer questions about whether the senator plans to release a video statement addressing his health, as pressure mounts for McConnell to speak publicly.

Independent journalist Nicholas Ballasy posted a video on X on Wednesday showing McConnell’s senior communications adviser Robert Steurer walking away without responding when asked if the senator would release a video statement.

Steurer also did not answer questions about Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s recent calls for McConnell to address the public regarding his condition.

The exchange comes as scrutiny of McConnell’s health continues following his hospitalization last month.

According to his office, the 84-year-old senator has remained out of public view while recovering and undergoing rehabilitation. McConnell has missed Senate votes and announced he would also miss Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm political event as he continues physical therapy.

Kentucky Governor Beshear, a Democrat, has repeatedly urged McConnell to provide a direct public update on his condition or step aside if unable to fulfill his duties.

In a recent letter, the governor called for McConnell to address Kentuckians directly and provide proof of his capacity to serve, arguing that greater transparency would help dispel speculation about his health.

McConnell’s office has released written statements and photographs during his recovery but has not issued a video message.

Earlier this week, aides stated the senator had not yet been medically cleared to leave the rehabilitation facility where he was receiving treatment. They said McConnell intends to complete his Senate term despite his extended absence from Washington.

Questions about McConnell’s condition have intensified in recent weeks as lawmakers and constituents seek more information about when he may return to the Senate.

While his office maintains that he is recovering, aides have provided limited details beyond statements describing his rehabilitation and physical therapy.

Steurer did not respond to Ballasy’s questions in the video posted Wednesday, offering no comment on whether McConnell plans to make a public appearance or release a recorded statement. His silence follows similar refusals by other members of the senator’s staff to address questions about McConnell’s recovery and timeline for returning to public life.
