White House Trade Adviser Warns of Democratic Socialism’s Threat to U.S. Stella Green, July 20, 2026 White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said Monday that the United States must fight back against far-left lawmakers, warning that democratic socialism poses a grave threat to American democracy and economic stability. Navarro described illegal immigration as having “imported different cultures, different people, a whole lot of folks.” He stated that in a democracy, when individuals with differing values and ideas gain power due to sheer numbers, the country becomes vulnerable. “We’re in a democracy,” Navarro said. “And when folks with different values and ideas have the power because of the sheer numbers, that’s when we get in trouble, and we’re getting into trouble big time.” The adviser compared Democratic candidates for office to Latin American socialist dictators such as Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and Juan Peron. “They must train these guys in rhetoric,” he said. Navarro warned that democratic socialists like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are effective communicators who spread a “false ideology” that risks destroying the country. He asserted that socialism and communism have never worked, causing “tragedy and poverty.” “As soon as more than half of the people of a country get control and push socialism,” Navarro added, “and take everything from the other half, everything disintegrates because there’s no innovation, there’s no entrepreneurship, there’s no freedom.” Navarro emphasized that younger Americans are increasingly susceptible to these messages. He stated his role at the White House is to create good jobs for the American people at fair wages and assured youth they will find meaningful employment. Politics
