Mayor Parker’s Midnight Call Ensures Will Smith Returns for Philadelphia Concert

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker personally intervened to convince hometown legend Will Smith to return to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway stage after severe storms nearly canceled his headlining performance at the “One Philly: Unity Concert for America.”

The closing performance only occurred because Parker persuaded Smith to return to the venue after he had already left.

Smith revealed the backstage details directly to the audience during his set.
“Mayor holding it down. Listen, we was at the hotel. We was on our way home,” he began.
“She called and was like, ‘Uh-uh, come on back out.’ Shoutout to Mrs. Mayor,” Smith added.

Smith reinforced the account on Monday by posting an Instagram video detailing the midnight phone call.
“The mayor called and said would we come back and go on at midnight. Come on man, this me. This me!” he said.

The concert, celebrating America’s 250th birthday, faced severe disruption when intense storms forced organizers to halt proceedings at 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, triggering a mass evacuation of thousands of attendees.

Prior to the storms, the show had progressed smoothly through sweltering daytime temperatures, which had already canceled other regional July 4 events, with completed performances by Infinity Song, Seal, Jordan Davis, and Jill Scott.

The severe weather threw the remaining lineup into chaos, leaving the status of several headline acts uncertain. Organizers confirmed shortly before midnight that the concert would resume with the Roots and a fireworks display, but pop star Christina Aguilera officially dropped out.

The remaining headliners — Will Smith, Kathy Sledge, State Property, and Meek Mill — were not initially confirmed to return. Both Smith and Questlove of the Roots tracked the developing situation by posting screenshots of live news reports to their Instagram stories.

The late-night resumption ultimately turned into an extended celebration of Philadelphia music, starting when the Roots finally took the stage around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, July 5. Following a 20-minute set, Kathy Sledge performed a medley of Sister Sledge hits, including “The Greatest Dancer” and “We Are Family.”

A heavy hip-hop lineup followed, featuring State Property rappers Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and the Young Gunz performing “What We Do.” Rapper Meek Mill maintained the momentum next, performing hits including his “Dreams and Nightmares” intro.

Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff ultimately closed the concert with a set of hip-hop classics, including “Brand New Funk,” “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song, and “Summertime.” On Monday, DJ Jazzy Jeff posted to Instagram to share how special it was to perform despite the weather, extending thanks to everyone involved. The entire event concluded at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday with a fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
