Lewin’s White House Appointment Scrapped After Conservative Activist Raises Concerns Over Past Ties

Former Department of Government Efficiency official Jeremy Lewin will not take a job at the White House National Security Council after conservative activist Laura Loomer raised concerns about his past ties to liberal constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe.

Lewin had been scheduled to begin Monday as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for Western Hemisphere affairs, but those plans were canceled following Loomer’s allegations. In a post on X, she cited a report that Lewin helped draft an amicus brief supporting transgender rights and sent a text message to classmates celebrating Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Loomer stated she had learned of Lewin’s White House aspirations about a month ago. “There were rumblings he was trying to get a position,” she said, adding that she had prepared her opposition in advance.

After leaving the Department of Government Efficiency, where he helped dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development, Lewin moved to the State Department. He currently serves as undersecretary of state for foreign assistance, humanitarian affairs, and religious freedom.

A State Department official contacted Loomer urging her to stop targeting Lewin, citing his contributions at the department. However, she maintained that this outreach did not change her view.
