Trump Announces World-Class East Potomac Golf Course Will Open to Public After Major Renovation

President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that the Department of the Interior will oversee the rebuilding of a Washington, D.C., golf course currently in disrepair. The project aims to transform the historic public course into “one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World,” which will be open to the public and capable of hosting major tournaments including the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, PGA Championship, and other PGA Tour events.

In a Truth Social post following a tour of East Potomac Golf Links, Trump described the current condition as “virtually unplayable” due to dead grass, deteriorated greens, a failed irrigation system, inadequate filtration, and trees damaged by years of neglect that posed safety hazards. He emphasized the renovation will be built to the “Highest Standards of Golf” while maintaining public access.

Construction is scheduled to begin September 1 under the supervision of the Interior Department, with renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio serving as lead designer. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Tom Fazio’s son Gavin joined Trump in inspecting the property, which sits along the Potomac River and offers sweeping views of Washington’s monuments.

The project is part of a broader initiative by President Trump to restore and beautify the nation’s capital. In his post, Trump also highlighted recent renovations to dozens of Washington monuments, statues, and fountains, as well as repairs to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after what he described as vandalism by “Criminal, Radical Left Vandals.”

The Wall Street Journal reported President Trump had been considering redeveloping East Potomac Golf Links for months. The historic course is currently managed by the nonprofit National Links Trust under a long-term lease with the National Park Service. The National Links Trust has stated it will continue operations until the National Park Service is ready to begin restoration.

Recent legal and administrative disputes over the property have been resolved through an agreement allowing federal authorities to proceed with the renovation plans. Axios noted this project joins several high-profile efforts by President Trump to reshape Washington, D.C. Trump described the restored course as “a tremendous success” that will bring prestige back to the nation’s capital while serving championship golf and the public for generations.
