Belfast Riots Ignite After Sudanese Man Charged with Near-Beheading Attack

A demonstration against racism and call for calm occurred in central Belfast, Northern Ireland on June 13, 2026, following several nights of disorder that erupted after a knife attack went viral across social media.

On June 8, 2026, a Sudanese man in his 30s was charged with attempted murder for stabbing a 44-year-old disabled man repeatedly in the head, neck, and back outside an apartment building on Kinnaird Avenue. Witnesses described the scene as an attempted beheading. The victim suffered serious injuries, including permanent loss of sight in one eye. Bystanders stepped in to assist.

The attack triggered riots across North Belfast, with masked protesters setting fires to homes and vehicles. Police deployed water cannons to control the unrest. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence as “sickening.”

Northern Ireland remains distinct from other parts of the UK in its demographic makeup: 97% of residents are White, predominantly British or Irish, with Christianity at nearly 80% (42% Catholic and significant Protestant shares). In contrast, Dublin, Republic of Ireland, shows a decline in religious identification: Catholic affiliation has fallen to 53%, while “no religion” stands at around 23%. London, meanwhile, has only 37% White British residents and 41% Christian adherence.

The resilience in Northern Ireland, where over 80-90% identify as Christian, contrasts with the Republic of Ireland’s trend. The 2022 Census revealed that Catholic identification dropped to 69%, with “no religion” rising to 14%. Christianity has historically fostered community cohesion through shared values of forgiveness and respect for law, whereas some interpretations of Islamic texts have been linked to historical ideas of conquest and non-believer treatment.

Similar incidents in Somali and Sudanese communities across the UK and Europe highlight these divisions. These groups face higher rates of knife crime, grooming gangs, and welfare dependency. The Belfast riots underscore a lack of effective political solutions for addressing rising tensions as immigration policies shift.
