Trump Promises Medicare Patients Will Pay Just $50 Per Month for Weight-Loss Drugs Starting July

President Donald Trump told workers at a Mack Trucks plant in Pennsylvania on Tuesday that sharply lower prices for popular weight-loss drugs could improve Americans’ health, reduce healthcare costs, and help Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections.

The president stated Medicare beneficiaries will gain access beginning July 1 to GLP-1 medications for as little as $50 per month under a new federal program. “That alone should win the midterms,” Trump said.

Trump added that seniors who previously faced monthly costs of roughly $1,200 to $1,400 for these medications could see those expenses fall dramatically under the administration’s drug-pricing initiatives. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has confirmed eligible Medicare beneficiaries will be able to obtain certain GLP-1 medications through the program starting July 1.

The administration has tied this initiative to Trump’s broader prescription-drug pricing efforts, which aim to bring U.S. drug costs closer to prices paid in other developed countries as outlined in White House fact sheets released earlier this year. According to the White House, agreements with major drug manufacturers have already reduced prices for several GLP-1 medications sold through the administration’s TrumpRx program. Average monthly prices for Ozempic fell from about $1,028 to roughly $350, while injectable Wegovy dropped from $1,349 to as low as $199 depending on dosage.

Trump argued expanding access to these drugs could improve public health by helping Americans address obesity and related conditions contributing to diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. Healthcare policy experts and industry analysts note that lower obesity rates could eventually reduce healthcare spending and increase workforce participation through improved health outcomes.

The president also linked the drug-pricing initiative to his broader affordability message, claiming lower prescription costs, reduced energy prices, and Republican tax policies would leave more money in Americans’ pockets. Trump has increasingly emphasized affordability as he prepares for next year’s congressional elections, with the White House highlighting healthcare, energy, and consumer costs as key economic issues for voters.

The Pennsylvania event was one of Trump’s most direct efforts to present lower healthcare costs as both an economic achievement and political asset as Republicans seek to defend their congressional majorities in 2026.
