Mia Sara Reveals ‘Ferris Bueller’ Experience Was a ‘Nightmare’: Calls John Hughes ‘Strange’

Actor Mia Sara has revealed that starring in the 1980s classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was a deeply negative personal experience, driven largely by her strained relationship with the film’s writer-director, John Hughes.

Sara stated in an interview that she does not typically give interviews because making “Ferris Bueller” was not a good experience for her. “I’m very aware of what a precious thing this movie is, and I don’t want to disappoint people,” she said.

Though the 1986 film became a defining milestone in her career—grossing over $70 million on a $5 million budget and earning critical acclaim—Sara attributed her negative view of the production to friction with Hughes.

“I didn’t get along well with John,” Sara told reporters, describing him as “a strange guy.”

She explained that the conflict stemmed from Hughes trying to force a specific group dynamic on the cast. “He wanted us all to hang out together and introduce us to French New Wave films,” she said. “But the others were seasoned actors, and I was a snotty New York kid who had seen all those movies, so he was frustrated.”

“I didn’t have the emotional maturity to deal with other people’s egos or my own,” Sara added.

This experience contrasted sharply with her co-star Jennifer Grey’s view of Hughes. Grey described him as “very playful” and said she “really connected with him.”

Beyond the set of the teen comedy, Sara admitted struggling with the industry at large. “I never really had the resilience to deal with the audition process,” she said. “There are some things in my career that I’m proud of, but overall, it was not a happy career for me.”

That unhappiness led the Brooklyn-born actress—whose first role was as Francesca on “All My Children” in 1983—to walk away from Hollywood altogether.

She now lives in a 17th-century farmhouse in Suffolk, England, where she focuses on writing poetry. After a 13-year hiatus from film, Sara returned to the big screen for Mike Flanagan’s 2024 movie “The Life of Chuck.”

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Sara explained how a casual social interaction led to her casting. “It feels a little daunting, but I’m very grateful,” she said. “We’ve been such fans, and we met socially—him and Kate Siegel—and he just said, ‘Don’t you ever really want to work again?’ I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know.’ He said, ‘Well, what if I offered you something?’ I said, ‘Well, OK, if you offer me something, I’ll do it.’”
