Congressman Accuses Democrats of Political Sabotage Over Government Shutdown

Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-Pa., accused Democrats on Saturday of deliberately prolonging the federal government shutdown for political gain, citing their refusal to pass funding measures that could have restored essential services. As the shutdown entered its 32nd day, Mackenzie targeted Democrat leadership, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, for prioritizing party interests over public welfare amid rising food insecurity ahead of the holidays.

Mackenzie stated that Democrats had “had the opportunity to do the right thing” but “refused to do it,” alleging their actions were transparently motivated by political strategy. He highlighted Schumer’s repeated opposition to government funding measures, noting 13 Senate votes against reopening the government. Mackenzie emphasized that the House had already approved critical programs such as SNAP, WIC, and Head Start in late September, while Democrats blocked efforts to restore funding.

The congressman pointed to statements by Democratic leaders as evidence of their calculated approach. He referenced Clark’s admission that the shutdown was being used for “leverage” and Schumer’s assertion that the situation “gets better every day,” which Mackenzie dismissed as misleading.

Mackenzie described the shutdown’s impact as “heartbreaking,” citing strains on families, food banks, and community programs like Head Start in his district. He warned of potential closures due to lack of federal support, emphasizing the growing hardship caused by inflation and stagnant wages. The congressman concluded that Democrats’ actions reflected a callous disregard for constituents, driven by opposition to former President Donald Trump’s policies.
