TRUMP’S TENSIONS WITH SENATE LEADER THUNE ESCALATE OVER VOTE COUNTS FOR KEY LEGISLATION

President Donald Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., as the Republican leader repeatedly informed the president that several of his top priorities lack the votes necessary for passage.

The dispute centers on the SAVE America Act, a Trump-backed election integrity measure requiring proof of citizenship and voter identification for federal elections.

Trump has made passage of this bill a major priority ahead of the midterm elections and has pressed Senate Republicans to find a path to enact it. Thune has consistently stated that the legislation falls short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster. “We don’t have the votes,” Thune said earlier this year, adding that the situation is “just a function of math” rather than a matter of leadership will.

Trump has urged Senate Republicans to consider changes to Senate rules, including weakening or eliminating the filibuster, but Thune has rejected those calls because several Republicans also oppose such moves.

The disagreement has expanded beyond election legislation. Trump has grown increasingly impatient with Senate resistance to national security initiatives, leading him at times to bypass Thune and work directly with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. This friction became more visible this week when Trump disrupted Senate plans involving intelligence matters and the renewal of Section 702 surveillance authorities, linking progress on those issues to action on the SAVE America Act.

Despite criticism from some Trump allies and conservative activists, Senate Republicans have largely rallied behind Thune. Many GOP senators view his position as a reflection of Senate realities rather than opposition to Trump’s agenda. Thune has argued privately and publicly that governing ultimately comes down to vote counts, while some senators have defended him as a leader who is candid with the White House about what can and cannot pass the chamber.

Trump has discussed his frustrations with allies and has occasionally questioned whether Senate Republicans are fighting hard enough for his priorities. However, the president has stopped short of calling for Thune’s removal, recognizing that such a move could spark a broader backlash among Republican senators whose support remains critical to advancing the administration’s agenda.
