York Revolution Forfeits Game Amid Player Opposition to Pride Night Uniforms

The York Revolution, a Pennsylvania Minor League Baseball team, forfeited Thursday night’s scheduled contest against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs after several players refused to wear Pride Night jerseys featuring rainbow-colored sleeves. The independent professional club canceled the game under Atlantic League rules requiring uniformed personnel to wear matching uniforms.

In a statement late Wednesday, the York Revolution announced the forfeit decision, noting that its annual Pride event—marking its 11th year—would proceed as planned at WellSpan Park despite the cancellation. “Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey and the club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game,” the organization stated.

The team emphasized that Pride Night festivities would continue with free public access to music, fan batting practice, and other on-field activities. Ticket holders will be able to redeem their tickets as rainout vouchers for any remaining 2026 regular-season home games. The club also pledged a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center, a York-based LGBTQ+ organization, in alignment with its longstanding partnerships.

The controversy follows recent tensions within professional baseball over Pride-themed events and uniforms. Earlier this week, Major League Baseball warned San Francisco Giants players after several altered team-issued Pride Night caps by adding Bible verses, while another player declined to wear the cap. MLB clarified that uniforms cannot be modified without authorization.

Pride-themed celebrations have become increasingly common in professional sports as teams expand outreach efforts for LGBTQ+ communities. However, some athletes have objected to promotional activities on religious or personal grounds, creating occasional conflicts between individual expression and team initiatives. York’s decision to forfeit rather than cancel Pride Night appears rare among professional baseball clubs, underscoring the tension between inclusivity efforts and player objections.
