Vance: ‘There’s Still a Lot More Work’ on Economy as Midterms Approach

Vice President JD Vance acknowledged Tuesday that while the Trump administration has made progress on key campaign promises, there remains “a lot more work to do” on economic matters as voters prepare for November’s midterm elections.

Speaking on ABC’s “The View,” Vance was pressed by co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin about whether Americans who supported President Donald Trump’s pledges to reduce inflation and lower costs would be satisfied with the administration’s economic record by election day.

Griffin noted that inflation remains elevated, wages have lagged, and many households continue to feel pressure from high living expenses.

“I think voters have every right to expect as much as possible out of their elected representatives,” Vance said. “We know that we were elected on a number of mandates—one was to close the border, which I think we’ve done successfully… and two was to lower prices.”

“There’s a lot more work to do,” he stated. “I think we’re making progress, but ultimately, we’ll make our pitch to voters in November—and they’re the ones who get to decide whether we’ve done a good job or not.”

The remarks come as public approval of the Trump administration has been weighed down by persistent concerns over the cost of living. Although inflation has eased from its peak levels, many Americans continue to face higher prices for housing, groceries, insurance, and other essentials compared with several years ago, contributing to voter frustration.

Additionally, the administration faces political headwinds from rising tensions in the Middle East, including the conflict involving Iran. Worries that regional instability could disrupt global energy markets and drive up fuel costs have intensified economic anxieties, even as recent declines in gasoline prices have provided some relief to consumers.

With the midterms approaching, officials expect the administration to emphasize progress on border security and economic stabilization while assuring voters that further improvements are imminent.
