Tennessee Congressman Burchett: U.S. Shouldn’t Pay Iran $300 Billion in Peace Deal, Calls Middle East ‘Quagmire’

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., has stated that the United States should not provide any financial assistance to Iran as part of a potential peace agreement, arguing that such moves would lead to U.S. involvement in a region he describes as a “quagmire.”

During his remarks, Burchett said: “I don’t get it. I don’t understand why we can’t get control of our own money and keep it within our country.” He added that the arrangement would result in “hate” from others and that there is “no reason for us to be involved.”

Burchett criticized the current energy situation, stating: “We export energy right now. I still don’t see why gas is going up… The oil companies are just using this to gouge us.” He also emphasized the need to prevent Iran from accessing materials that could be used for nuclear weapons development: “If we think they’re trying to access it, we need to stop it.”

The Trump administration has reportedly considered supporting a $300 billion reconstruction and investment fund for Iran if Tehran fulfills commitments under a newly signed memorandum of understanding and reaches broader settlements on its nuclear program and regional conduct. While President Donald Trump has dismissed reports of such payments as “fake news,” Vice President JD Vance and others have confirmed the potential establishment of an international fund to aid Tehran.

Burchett reiterated that he does not see any benefit in the proposed deal, stating: “I can’t see it anywhere being a good deal.” He warned that many countries would be involved and urged Americans to disengage: “I just think we need to wash our hands of this place and get the heck out.”
