Rep. Troy Downing Calls Trump’s State of the Union Address a Unifying “Great Speech”

Rep. Troy Downing, R-Mont., described President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Wednesday as a “great speech” focused on American unity and shared pride.

Downing emphasized that the address highlighted “the president being proud of America, Americans being proud of America, about the successes we’ve accomplished for the American people, and just the fact that it was not just about him, but about us — celebrating our sports heroes and military heroes.”

He added that he left the event feeling “pretty good,” noting that while the speech set a record as the longest State of the Union address ever, “it didn’t seem the longest. It seemed about the right size to me.”

Downing also stated that President Trump was correct in urging the Senate to take up and pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, citing polling data showing that “up to 85% of Americans agree with this policy” — which requires voters to prove U.S. citizenship before casting federal ballots.

“The fact that Democrats are holding this back is confounding to me,” Downing said, adding it also “confounds their constituents because this is incredibly important.”
