FCC’s “Pledge America” Campaign for 250th Anniversary Sparks Criticism from Democratic FCC Member

In honor of America’s 250th anniversary celebration, the Federal Communications Commission has launched the “Pledge America” campaign. The initiative aims to encourage broadcasters to air patriotic content that celebrates the nation’s journey and inspires citizens by highlighting historical accomplishments.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr stated in a statement: “The American story has defined modern history and spread freedom, opportunity, and prosperity across the globe.” Carr called for broadcasters to pledge programming promoting civic education, national pride, and shared history.

Carr emphasized that such programming is critical due to declining levels of civic education. He suggested specific measures including public service announcements on American history, news segments featuring local historical sites like National Park Service locations, starting broadcasts with the “Star-Spangled Banner” or Pledge of Allegiance, airing music by prominent American composers, and daily “Today in American History” announcements.

Anna Gomez, the lone Democrat on the FCC, criticized Carr’s initiative on social media. She wrote: “Nothing is more American than defending our constitutional rights against those who would erode our civil liberties.” Gomez added that broadcasters could participate by “defending their First Amendment rights and refusing government interference.”
