Hochul Warns Trump Administration: “You Do Not Want to Go There” on Immigration Cooperation

Stella Green, February 2, 2026

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has moved to block agreements that would allow local police to assist federal immigration enforcement, warning the Trump administration of potential conflict in the state.

In an interview on “Morning Joe,” Hochul stated, “You don’t want to go there.” She emphasized her role as New York’s governor, saying, “In New York, we know who we are, and I have to stand up and forbid these agreements.”

Hochul also revealed efforts to legally block federal immigration detention centers in the state under environmental review laws. She noted concerns about proposed facilities near wetlands and environmentally sensitive areas, stating, “There are signs that they’re trying to build a large detention center just 45 miles outside the city.”

The governor warned that President Donald Trump should avoid picking a fight with New York, adding, “I think they know that if you come after New York City, you will destabilize the economic engine of the country. You do not want to go there.”

While acknowledging local police might be better equipped for de-escalation during federal operations, Hochul criticized the lack of training among federal agents, saying, “They don’t belong in this.” She stressed her commitment to fighting federal immigration efforts and expressed pride in communities across the nation: “We are standing up; we’re taking a strong position. We’re saying enough is enough. We’re taking our country back.”
