Massive Redaction Failures in Epstein Document Release Leave Survivors Vulnerable

Stella Green, February 2, 2026

Lawyers representing over 200 alleged Jeffrey Epstein victims have urgently appealed for a federal court to compel the Justice Department to remove a sweeping online release of Epstein-related records, citing severe mishandling that has endangered survivors.

In a letter sent on Sunday to U.S. District Judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer—judges who presided over Epstein’s criminal case and the prosecution of his associate Ghislaine Maxwell—the attorneys warn that inadequate redaction of victims’ identities constitutes an “unfolding emergency.”

Brittany Henderson and Brad Edwards, legal representatives for more than 200 alleged survivors, stated that the Justice Department’s publication of millions of documents has exposed sensitive personal information and placed individuals at significant risk.

“Within the past 48 hours alone, the undersigned have reported thousands of redaction failures affecting nearly 100 individual survivors whose lives have been irrevocably upended by this latest release,” they wrote. “The scale, consistency, and persistence of these errors defy any explanation of institutional competence.”

The letter details alarming inaccuracies: some files repeatedly listed a minor victim’s name up to 20 times, while others disclosed dozens of underage victims with minimal or no redaction. Despite repeated notifications from the attorneys, the Justice Department has failed to correct many of these errors.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the release on Sunday, asserting that the department took “great pains” to protect victims. “Every time we hear from a victim or their lawyer that they believe their name was not properly redacted, we immediately rectify that,” he stated. Blanche added that the number of documents affected by errors is minimal.

Henderson emphasized in a separate statement that harm continues: “With every second that passes, additional harm is being caused to these women. They are scared, devastated, and begging for our government to protect them from further injury.”

Not all responses have been critical. Prominent attorney Alan Dershowitz argued on Monday that the Justice Department’s approach was overly restrictive, stating, “I don’t want to see anything redacted. I want to see every single accusation—anybody who named the accuser should be named, and their background information disclosed.”
