Melania Trump Documentary Breaks Box Office Records with Historic Debut

Ella Thomas, January 31, 2026

A new documentary focused on first lady Melania Trump’s final 20 days before President Donald Trump’s second inauguration has achieved an opening weekend gross of at least $8 million, marking the largest debut for a documentary in over a decade.

Marc Beckman, the film’s producer, confirmed the success on Saturday, stating it has become “the number one highest opening in the past decade for documentaries.”

The film, which chronicles Melania Trump’s activities during the period leading up to her husband’s second inauguration in January 2025, is also described as the most expensive documentary ever produced. Beckman noted that the movie received an “A” grade from the Cinema Score—a metric measuring audience sentiment—describing it as a rare achievement.

Industry analysts project “Melania” will finish third at the box office this weekend, trailing only two recently released films, “Send Help” and “Iron Lung,” while outperforming Jason Statham’s action thriller “Shelter.”

The documentary has surprised some anti-Trump observers who anticipated struggles due to sparse early ticket sales. Instead, it has resonated strongly with conservative audiences across the South and midwestern regions.

A targeted marketing campaign aimed at older conservatives culminated in a high-profile Washington, D.C., premiere on Thursday attended by Trump and prominent supporters.

Demographically, the film’s success is driven primarily by women aged 55 and above. According to data, 72% of opening-day attendees were in this age group, with 78% of all ticket buyers falling into that category.

At its premiere at the Trump-Kennedy Center, Melania Trump remarked: “Some have called this a documentary. It is not. My film is a very deliberate act of authorship—it offers perspectives and moments only few have seen.”

Beckman described the film as following the first lady through family meetings, business engagements, and philanthropic efforts ahead of her return to the White House. He also highlighted behind-the-scenes security planning sessions, including Secret Service preparations in response to two recent assassination attempts.

One notable scene features President Trump discussing his legacy: “He’s saying his legacy is to be a peacemaker,” Beckman explained, “and then she adds—unifier.”

The producer emphasized the first lady’s work ethic and dedication to family: “We see this person who I’ve known for over 20 years—a hard-working individual deeply devoted to her loved ones.”
